Retro Replay #8: American Movie Classics (promos from the 1980s)

Back before Turner Classic Movies, this was the go-to channel for uncut, commercial free, old-school Hollywood gems, hosted by Bob Dorian and Nick Clooney (George's father). Nowadays, AMC has become unrecognizable.

Oops! The Star Trek clip is from March of '69. (I'll try to do better!) To see the corrected video, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/Nz5gG9c499A/v-deo.html I have also added a short Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea clip to the new video. PS: At the 12:30 mark you'll see a commercial with Lauren Hutton (and a brief shot of Alex Rocco) but at the end of the ad it looks like a different actress. ...

Tim Conway at the Emmys is priceless. In my "magazine section," one or two British imports may have sneaked in.

Oops: The Circus magazine depicted is clearly not from 1970. My bad. And PS: Due to copyright issues I had to use a live version of American Woman by The Guess Who.

Re-posted with corrections. Many aborted attempts to get this through the copyright cops. This version is shorter than originally intended because I had to drop two songs. But I think the end result is OK.

Retro Replay #7: Nick at Nite (part 2)
The horrible typewriters that employees used back then, the ergonomics were terrible with the hand and wrist positions while typing for long periods of time. She should be more concerned about getting a repetitive motion injury/RMI like carpal tunnel syndrome than being asked out for lunch by her supervisor. 5:35
Cool camera used for photography back then when real film was used, truly a lost art. 2:39
9:00.
Excellent!
Married couple, hotel, twin beds? Better, no. Want to go back? Easy, throw everything out.
Sadly, America has been hijacked by a certain tribe with insatiable greed and corruption.
crusty and warm.. just how i remember em
Brings me back when I was a kid. Ha. Fun times. I even had the 6 million dollar man. With his engine block he lifted and the eye you looked through. My mom bought it from Kmart. 😊 remembered all those TV ads. Remember your parents saying. Don't sit too close to the TV you might go blind. Ha, and you were the human TV remote.
Kurt Russell is looking good!
Ah, wood paneling and big boxy televisions in the 70s. 🥹 never thought I’d feel nostalgic over that!
I love the communitarian spirit of Fredflix videos… it’s rare these days
it’s funny all these years later and “1976” still means “the bicentennial summer” in my head lol… the movie “Dazed and Confused” kind of captured the spirit of that summer for teens who were. older than me
The great thing about the bicentennial is it was both a national celebration and a huge local celebration with town parades… almost like Xmas in July with summer fun replacing gift giving… if I recall the hype started in 1975 with all kinds of commercials, planning ahead, etc… It was a fabulous summer and I was only 5
You forget how expensive decent electronics we’re back in the day. You can buy a very nice smartphone TODAY for the same price they wanted for a CB in 1976! That was why in the 80s ud have to build ur stereo system piece by piece because the whole system cost a fortune
Gonna need my first 10 seconds back...
I wish we could do a reset. Everything was simpler back then.
What the hell happened to AMC. It was a great channel long ago. I don't know what it is nowadays. Just like lots of other things in the world.🐂💩🎥
I was basically a new born at the beginning of 71.
I remember watching the evening news and Brokaw covering the Fitzgerald story...In mid Michigan later that day we got quite a bit of snow I remember walking home in the storm after checking my traps.
This started out talking about the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking with a load of Iron ore and a couple minutes later showing a car and driver mag talking about Detroit's dilemma... ironically the iron ore the Fitz was carrying would most likely end up in Detroit manufacturing a car.
I love this channel. Thank you so much for the work you put in making these.
I had that issue of Teen with Susan Dey on the cover
"Midway - in Sensurround!" - I noticed it in the newspaper ad, but the trailer omitted it.
Columbian gold
I was 14 in 75 what a great decade it was for a kid in the USA
Needed a Chicago album cover. As a kid, every time I went to someone's house I would look through their record collection. EVERYBODY had a Chicago record...
It's really scary what this world has become.
Dang the memories.
I was 14😁❤
7:28 As a comic book enthusiast, I appreciate that Fred includes segments like this, as well as showing some of the covers.
3:02 Looks like Valerie Bertinelli.
Borise, jel moze oba istovremeno? Molim te kazi da moze
I'm 15 playing Frampton comes alive probably a million times
Linda Purl .. had crush on her back then at 9 years old ... still do today :)
The Sox should have won that series. Another reason Pete Rose and the Reds were not liked in New England for years.
So true
Perhaps the best summer of my life. Junior high just ended and I was about to enter high school in the fall. Had my first official shave (mostly peach fuzz:). Hanging out with my two childhood buddies listening to great music, lifting weights, talking about girls and seeing some great movies! Exciting times! Thanks!😄
Im class of 78 it be nice to go back this was people had som3 sense an they knew the first time they 2ent to bathroom if they 2ere a boy or a girl. An the music is still better than anything out today.
Was that Bill Bixby in the United commercial?
Loved it , memories, and did ya notice zero lame tats, what a a hole you must be to get your body covered in ink
I was 2 years old in 1975. I want to go back
That was so badass, loved it.
October 1970 also saw the FLQ Crisis in Quebec...murder and kidnapping...a dark time in Canada's history
Will y’all chip in and buy me a Johnny-7 One Man Army toy arsenal? That commercial waa better than most ads for the current military.
My father smoked two packs of True Blues a day. Used to crack open the the little window in front of the door on flick his ashes out on car trips, with my brother and me sitting in the backseat taking ashes to the face!😂 True Blue ended up being my first cigarette at 14. Soon I was sneaking a couple cigs a day from his pack. A few years later I switched to cowboy killers and developed my own two pack a day habit. Fortunately I quit after about 12 years. Amazing we used to smoke at the office, on planes, in restaurants, in stores, etc. What a different world.
I was 11 -listening to Top 40 radio and The Beatles, riding bike, swimming, playing with friends and watching great tv It was a fun time to be a kid kn the midwest. Yeah the news could be scary…… but we had fun and did not have as much parental supervision back then…..
Everyone was buying small compact cars.
NYC was really bad back then.
graduated in late 60s, went ito nam. loved the 70s.
Amazing collection!!!!
